Allegra does not like car rides. She doesn’t sleep in the car and gets restless very easily. So we decided to stop over half way on our way to Plett. Having stayed at Schoone Oordt Country House years ago, I had always wanted to go back so thought it would be a good choice.
That was an understatement. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed like family, by Alison and her beautiful dogs. The staff were all so friendly and welcoming, helping with our bags right away. We had booked their family suite and since Allegra’s grandmother was with us we assumed she would sleep in the suite with us. To our surprise she was given her own room - and a luxury one at that! Our family suite was very spacious, with a separate room comprising of two bunk beds, a full bathroom complete with a kids’ basin (which Allegra loved), a sitting area and a large balcony overlooking the gardens.
After checking in we were invited to enjoy tea and scones on the verandah. The setting is so tranquil and serene, it feels like you have been transported back in time. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to G&T’s…perfect for a warm summer afternoon.
Although we opted to eat out at one of the nearby restaurants, the guesthouse also offers a dinner which sounds absolutely tantalising. On our arrival back to our suite that evening we found some delicious chocolate truffles waiting for us.
After an incredibly relaxing sleep we were treated to a breakfast fit for royalty. Allegra got her own vintage high chair, much to her delight. The breakfast is three courses - not to mention tea, coffee and scones as well. The restaurant setting is so relaxing, with light streaming in and melodic piano music playing.
I was honestly so sad that we weren’t staying longer. It’s a place I could easily stay for a week and although it’s such a stunning place, they were so accommodating to Allegra and we never once felt out of place. Swellendam itself holds a very special place in my heart and Schoone Oordt is perfectly positioned to explore this quaint and friendly town. We will certainly be back and we can’t wait to stay at Schoone Oordt again.
