A Family-Friendly Gem on the KZN South Coast: Our Stay at 305 Guesthouse

In an attempt to escape the bitter cold of mid-winter in Cape Town we decided to head off to KZN for a family holiday. Having not been to the South coast before we thought it would be a good base for our trip. I had seen 305 Guesthouse on Instagram and encouraged by the gorgeous photos and positive reviews I decided to book us a few nights stay.

From the moment we arrived, I knew we’d made the right choice. The property is perched up on a hill in Amanzimtoti with sweeping ocean views and lush, green surroundings. It has this relaxed, old-school holiday feel about it, but with beautifully updated rooms and plenty of thoughtful touches. You can tell it’s a family-run business because there’s genuine care in how everything is done - from the friendly staff to the little extras in your room.

What makes it even more special is the story behind the place. Originally built back in 1969, it started out as a modest 2-bedroom home. Mr and Mrs Woodhead bought it from an elderly lady who lived there with 19 cats (which immediately made me smile - can you even imagine?). Back then, it was the only double-storey house in Iphala Road, and the local fishermen nicknamed it the Doll House, using it as a landmark while out at sea. Over time, the Woodhead family expanded the home and eventually turned it into the welcoming guesthouse it is today. It’s grown far beyond just a few rooms - they now have a range of beautifully styled rooms and suites, a lovely restaurant, a wellness clinic offering massages and beauty treatments, and even conference facilities for those needing a working break by the sea.

One of the things that stood out for me is how versatile the venue is. Not only is it great for families and holidaymakers, but you can also book private picnics on the lawn overlooking the ocean. I saw a few guests enjoying beautifully set-up picnic baskets with blankets and bubbly while watching the sunset, and it looked so special. They also host birthday parties, weddings and all sorts of events. It’s one of those places where you can picture a big family lunch, a small celebration or even a romantic proposal happening.

Our room was airy, spotless and had one of those views you can lose hours to, just watching the waves roll in. Allegra loved the pool area and the gardens, and there was a real sense of space for kids to roam safely while we sipped our morning coffee on the deck.

Another bonus is how close 305 is to everything. Just a few minutes’ drive away is Galleria Mall, which quickly became our go-to for shopping, snacks and entertainment. It’s a big centre with loads of shops, restaurants and even a full-on carnival area with rides for the kids. Allegra was in her element on the carousel and bumper cars, and there’s also an ice rink for those feeling brave enough to hit the ice.

We made the most of the on-site restaurant too, which served up hearty breakfasts and light lunches - exactly what you need when you don’t feel like getting in the car. I also booked myself a quick back and neck massage at the wellness centre which was worth every cent after the long drive from Durban.

What I loved most though was how easy everything felt. No fuss, no pretence — just a lovely, well-run guesthouse in a beautiful spot, with history and heart. If you’re planning a family trip to KZN’s South Coast, I’d honestly recommend adding 305 Guesthouse to your list. It’s the kind of place you arrive at as a guest and leave already planning your next stay.
